  The "Clinical Research Center for Chronic Obstructive Airway Diseases (COAD Research Center)", located at the Asan Medical Center (AMC) in Seoul, Korea, is supported by the Korean Ministry of Health &Welfare (MOHW) for nine years from 2004 to 2013.

Our mission is to create an infrastructure for 'Clinical Research on COPD and Asthma', and to develop and implement 'Clinical Practice Guidelines' on the specific diseases.

Prof. Sang Do Lee from Asan Medical Center is appointed as the principal investigator (PI) to work with around 80 researchers from 22 affiliated hospitals and medical colleges throughout Korea,

all of whom are dedicated to the highest quality research in the following multidisciplinary fields: Pulmonology, Allergy & Clinical Immunology, Critical Care Medicine, Radiology, Evidence-based Medicine, Epidemiology, and Sports Medicine.

COAD Research Center has five specialized teams as follows;
Team Ⅰ: Clinical Research on COAD Prof. Sang-Do Lee, Pulmonology, AMC
Team Ⅱ: Clinical Research on Asthma Prof. Hee-Bum Moon, Allergy & heumatology,AMC
Team Ⅲ: Support Evidence-Based-Medicine and Assess Economic Efficiency
Prof. Hyung-Sik Ahn, Preventive Medicine, Korea University Hospital

The staff members who are from AMC and University of Ulsan College of Medicine and are joining COAD center include Profs. Dong Soon Kim, Chae Man Im, Jun Bum Seo, Yeon Mok Oh, Yoo Suk Cho, Sang Bum Hong, Young Soo Jin, and Moo Song Lee. Our mission comes alive with extensive collaborative researches, symposium, seminars and workshops as well as by the continuous and valuable interactions among the researchers. We also attempt to present and share our research results with other academic and research institutions in Korea.

We're currently in the process of standardizing various clinical evaluation methods including personal and family histories of respiratory disease, results of lung function test and allergy test, quality of life assessment and other prognostic factors.

Our efforts to develop and implement the standardized clinical practice guidelines for COPD and asthma will enable us to improve wellness of life of all people and promote high quality of medical care. We also plan to establish an infrastructure to become the hub of clinical research in the East Asia regions that will actively conduct multinational clinical trials.
